Question

Never had one before, and I don't know much about the process. I know to use a reputable place, but what kind of licenses and such should I look for? And what about cost? I was thinking of something small on my upper arm, maybe only a few inches wide, and maybe with a few colors. I don't even know how long that might take...

Anyway, I know a bunch of you guys here have tats, so any help is appreciated

I advise against smallish pieces.
larger looks better.
time varies as well, depending on the piece and the artist.
(and how much of a pussy you are )

the license thing varies from place to place, I don't know what the laws are in your area.

above all, make sure it's all clean, and make sure you'll want that design in 20 years.

best of luck.

and welcome to the club.

Like you said, find a reputable shop. go through theyre portofolio and find an artist you like.

Also try to find a shop where you're well. If you like the ambiance of the shop the experience should be way more enjoyable.

As for licences, up here no shop need anything, I know it's not the same in every states though. But find a place that looks clean. Ask to see the autoclave (don't know the name of it in english, that's the steam machine that sterelise everything) Normally when the artist is getting ready and set-up his stuff, you should see that everything is new and everything is coverd up so nothing is transmited (wow... I just reread myself, and it looks so dangerous , but it's just basic security)

As for the price normaly here it's more or less about 100$/hour. So if you want something that isn't to big on your arm and it take about 1-2 hours you can do the math . tipping is always welcome also.

Any more question I haven't touch?

You start going to the gym and now you want a tattoo? Have you become someone's prison bitch?

I suggest a "My Little Pony" tattoo... or maybe going with "Strawberry Shortcake"?

It says "I'm a bad ass and can take any criticism." Really!

Thanks for the input guys, I think that gives me a better idea. I'm in Massachusetts and I've heard the hourly rate here is around $100.

Other than cleanliness, I think my biggest concern would be how the piece turns out...so i know I'm going to want a good artist.

And I wonder about the whole permanency thing...if I don't love the thing 20 years from now, at the very least I'll remember loving it at the time and why I got it. I think that's why I want to get a smaller one in a less obvious place - but is that reason enough to NOT get one?

that's why it's important to see the portfolio of the guy. Pictures are worth a 1000 words, and for tattoo, it's pretty important imo.

Also find somebody who can draw... might look stupid to say taht, but some tatooer don't know shit about arts...

Custom pieces are the best way to go imo. By custom I mean, you meet the guy, tell him what you want and he draws it for you. Better the off the flash sheet(sp?) imo. Also if it's custom, you'll be sure to never see your tattoo on someon else.

And I wonder about the whole permanency thing...if I don't love the thing 20 years from now, at the very least I'll remember loving it at the time and why I got it. I think that's why I want to get a smaller one in a less obvious place - but is that reason enough to NOT get one?

I say find your idea, wait 6 month and if in 6 month you still want it, then you should be good for the next 20 years...

As for the size, I'd go with Peeker on that one... you don't need something extra huge, but sometimes small tattoo don't age that well. But once you'll find your artist he'll be able to tell you what size you should go.
